What is mead?
With an ABV varying in strength between 8 to 20%. There are many sorts of mead drink, ranging from those that are made from fermented honey, to the roman style of mixing blends of honey with wine (known as mulsum mead).
Different Mead Flavours
The basic or traditional mead derives its taste from the blends of honey used to produce it. This original mead is often given different, additional flavours by infusion of various fruits, spices, grains or occasionally hops. How old is Mead?
Mead is an incredibly old traditional alcoholic drink, it is arguably the oldest alcoholic beverage in human history, with evidence of its consumption dating back to 7000 BC in China. Mead is known from many sources of ancient history throughout Europe, Africa and Asia and is often referred to as “honey wine,” but it’s actually in a category of its own, “it can be regarded as the ancestor of all fermented drinks.”
Where do we get the term Honeymoon from?
The term “Honeymoon” is widely believed to come from an Old Northern European tradition, where newlyweds were given a month’s supply of mead, or a “moon’s worth” of mead, to encourage fertility and ensure a “sweet” start to their marriage.

Our meads plus our range of fruit wines and spirits are produced and bottled at our winery on Holy Island. Our shop on the island is open 360 days of the year, should you wish to visit us, however please check tide times as access to the island is tidal.
